THE RUINS OF CASTELVECCHIO - San Gimignano (Siena)
The old hamlet of Castelvecchio stands on a remote cliff, bordered by two rivers. Once colonized by the Romans it was later, in the Longobard era, provided with city walls "castrum vetus" from which the name probably derives. Later Castelvecchio belonged first to the Bishop of Volterra, and then became a free city and eventually came under the control of San Gimignano which made it into an efficient defensive stronghold against Volterra; thanks to its strategic position it was virtually impregnable. The walls had two bastions and, to protect the only gateway, a keep was built but was later replaced by the tower built around 1450. The town was abandoned towards the end of the mediaeval ages after the plague had decimated the population. The ruins of several houses, mills, and the church can still be clearly seen. At the end of the town stands the eastern tower which offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
